Who We Are

Catawba Hospital, part of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services (DBHDS), specializes in serving adults who need mental health care. Catawba Hospital is a 110-bed state, acute psychiatric hospital serving adults aged 18 through 64 and geriatric adults aged 65 and up. Both short-term "acute care" units and dedicated geriatric units are offered.  Private and semi-private rooms are available.

Catawba Hospital is affiliated with the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where staff psychiatrists may have faculty appointments and help train psychiatry residents and medical students.  A clinical practicum is available for students of various disciplines including nursing, psychology, social work, music therapy, recreation therapy, and food and nutritional services.

Intake Process
Individuals admitted to Catawba must be prescreened by their local Community Services Board (CSB) and meet criteria to be placed under a temporary detention order (TDO). Individuals may also be ordered by the court for involuntary treatment if involved in the criminal justice system. Catawba does not accept direct or voluntary admissions from the community.
