Who We Are

Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Services (SVLAS) provides free civil legal services from three field offices located throughout the region. Applications are accepted online or by telephone. Apply Online at Online Application and by telephone 1-888-201-2772. 

SVLAS handles problems such as Consumer (bill problems, utility problems, credit issues, garnishment, bankruptcy). Public Benefits(Medicaid, Food Stamps, SSI, Unemployment). Education issues (Special Education). Housing (landlord abuses, poor housing conditions, public housing, security deposits, evictions). Family Problems (domestic violence, divorce, support and custody). These are just examples and not a complete list. English; Translation Service available. Line.

SVLAS does NOT handle, or give advice about, traffic tickets or any type of criminal case.

SVLAS serves residents of the following areas: Counties: Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe. and cities: Bristol, Galax, Norton, Radford.

The office is fully accessible. Will travel to meet you if you are homebound, disabled or otherwise unable to come to us.

If you live in one of the counties or cities in the service area, you may apply for service by calling the centralized intake unit or the toll-free number of 1-888-201-2772. Will speak with an intake worker who will determine eligibility .
