Who We Are
Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) is a nonprofit law firm established in 1977 to provide free civil legal services to eligible low-income residents in twenty counties and seven cities in Central, Southside, and Western Tidewater Virginia. All initial intake goes through VLAS's LawLine at 866-534-5243 during the hours of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 am until 3:30 pm. If advice is all that is needed, advice can be given over the telephone immediately. More extensive service can also be provided.
The online application will pre-screen your eligibility and collect essential information, but you will still need to call LawLine and speak to an intake paralegal to confirm your information and complete the application. The Online Application speeds up the application process by providing a LawLine priority code. Visit Ways to Apply
VLAS serves the entire community by providing free information, advice and representation in such areas as housing, healthcare, economic self-sufficiency, education, employment, public benefits, disabilities, consumer purchases, and family relations.
No fee for service except possible out of pocket expenses such as filing fees or publication notices. Interpreters are available. Pre recorded legal information on a variety of topics is available after hours and on weekends.
VLAS casehandlers are able to meet with clients at this location. Schedule an appointment with the office.
