Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (CVLAS) provides free legal services in civil matters to persons with low income and those over 60 years of age and preventive law information to the community in civil matters. Apply online and follow the prompts.
Pre-recorded legal information is available by calling 1-866-534-5243 (toll-free) before 9:00 am, after 5:00 pm, and all day on weekends and legal holidays. Topics covered are bankruptcy, debt collection, divorce, domestic violence, health care, housing, and more.

Household income must be below the federal poverty guidelines. Households also must have low resources. The elderly (60 or older) may receive legal advice without regard to their finances, in certain cases. Call Intake at 804-200-2132 All clients first must do an intake and be screened for eligibility. CVLAS does intake by phone messages we call back, by in-person walk-ins, and by internet on-line.
