Who We Are

TANF provides temporary financial assistance to eligible families with children To be eligible, a family must be financially needy and must meet certain requirements.   Eligible families receive a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs.  Participants may be provided with services such as job skills training, work experience, job readiness training, child care assistance, transportation, and other work related expenses.

An eligible child must be under age 18, or if 18, will graduate from high school before age 19, going to school regularly if he is between the ages of five and 18, living with a parent or other relative, and a U.S. citizen or an eligible immigrant.

 

Chesapeake residents can apply for TANF at the Department of Human Services, 100 Outlaw Street, Chesapeake, VA. 23320. You can apply for TANF the same day you request an application, however, you will be given an appointment to come in at a later date. An interview is required to complete the application process.
