Who We Are
The mission of the Appomattox County Public School is to develop each student's full academic potential by providing high-quality educational opportunities in a caring, safe, positive environment; to encourage lifelong learning; and to develop ethical, responsible, contributing members for an ever-changing society.
The Appomattox County Adult Learning Center was established in 1989 to meet some of the specific academic needs of adults in our county. About 100 students enroll each year for a variety of reasons; therefore, we offer a wide variety of programs including:
- GED (General Educational Development) Examination Preparation
- ABE (Adult Basic Education) in reading, math, and writing skills
- Individual help for beginning readers
- Tutoring children with homework
- Basic computer skills
- Family Literacy
- ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
- Basic Life Skills such as reading a ruler, applying for a job, resume writing
There is no charge to attend, and classes are small enough to ensure individual attention. Students at the Adult Learning Center use their newly developed skills in many ways. After earning their GED, some students go on to further their education at community college or business school, while others pursue new career opportunities or promotions at their existing jobs. Hopefully, all of our students are able to use their academic abilities to enrich their daily lives. The Adult Learning Center is located on Business 460 next to the school bus shop. We are open Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00-12:00 p.m. Students may enroll at any time during the school year.
