Who We Are
Fairfax County Fire & Rescue offers a program to provide fire safety for people who are deaf or hard of hearing at no cost.
The Visual Smoke Alarm Program offers a special device to alert deaf and hard of hearing occupants when smoke or fire is detected. The alarm will produce an increased audible alert and emit a strobe light when activated. There are also other devices available specifically for sleeping areas. These items are made for bed areas and will vibrate to awake and alert the individual when the smoke alarm is activated.
Residents of Fairfax County can obtain one of these alarms by contacting the Northern Virginia Resource Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NVRC) at 703-352-9055 or 703-352-9065 (TTY). Each individual will be required to have a screening through NVRC in order to evaluate their specific needs.
For more information about this program, you can contact the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Public Affairs and Life Safety Education at 703-246-3801 or TTY 711.
