Who We Are

Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) are audible and/or vibrotactile units that are integrated with an existing pedestrian push button to alert blind or vision impaired pedestrians of the presence of a walk signal. The process of requesting and installing an APS involves a joint effort between the VA Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the VA Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (VDBVI).

A request can also be made by contacting VDBVI at (800) 622-2155 and contacting the correct Orientation and Mobility Specialist for your area. If the intersection in question is in a town or city's jurisdiction, then VDOT's procedures would not apply.

The visually impaired person using the APS will need training from an Orientation and Mobility Specialist.
