The Virginia Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) was established to increase the energy efficiency of residences, reduce the energy burden occupied by low-income persons and families with children, while ensuring their health and safety. The WAP program offers energy conservation and health and safety measures that include but are not limited to:
- Sidewall insulation installed using the dense-pack method where applicable
- Attic insulation installed to program specifications
- Air infiltration measures to alleviate heating and/or cooling loss
- No storm doors or storm windows.
Priority is given to the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and families with children. Home owner-occupied units will receive precedence over rental units.
The program provides direct installation of energy-saving measures such as: sealing air-leaks with insulation, caulking, and weather-stripping; repairing leaky duct systems; repairing and/or replacing inefficient or unsafe heating systems; and installing carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
