Who We Are

Virginia Voice provides an audio reading and information service to individuals who have difficulty reading print for themselves.

Using a special radio system, the agency broadcasts daily the reading of current printed publications -- newspapers, magazines, books, as well as publications of various organizations and agencies --for the benefit of those who cannot read for themselves because of visual impairment or other physical disability. Listeners include those with cerebral palsy and Parkinson's disease as well as those with macular degeneration and other eye disorders. Persons with reading disabilities resulting from strokes or other trauma are eligible for this service. The service is also for those with learning disabilities like dyslexia.

Specially-manufactured radios are provided on loan to eligible applicants. Service is available on demand, from any location, on the Web. The service is also available by cable connection in the Richmond area.

Eligible applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria: legally blind; have partial vision-requiring the use of visual aids other than ordinary eyeglasses; have a physical disability that prevents reading because of an inability to hold printed material; or have any type of reading disability.

Virginia Voice is a non-profit organization supported by tax-deductible contributions. Your contribution will be the gift of the printed word to those for whom it is otherwise inaccessible.
