Who We Are

Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society in Castlewood (SVLAS) provides legal services to a low-income community of 92,000 people from three field offices located throughout the region.

Covers Consumer and employment problems (hospital bills, utility problems, credit, garnishment, bankruptcy and job discrimination). Administrative Problems (Welfare, Medicaid, food stamps, SSI, unemployment insurance and education problems). Housing problems (Landlord abuses, bad housing conditions, public housing, security deposits, evictions and FHA problems). Family Problems (domestic violence, divorce, nonsupport and custody) Other Problems (civil rights, wills and restoration of drivers license for habitual offenders).

If you are a resident of any of the following cities or counties, you qualify for legal aid services: Bland, Bristol, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Galax, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Norton, Pulaski, Radford, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe.

If you live in any of the counties or cities listed above, please call the centralized intake unit to apply for services. The toll-free number is 866-534-5243 for Virginia only. The centralized intake unit accepts application calls Monday through Thursday from 9AM until 3PM. No applications are accepted on Fridays.
Accessibility: Fully accessible. Will travel to meet you if you are homebound, disabled or otherwise unable to come to us.
