Who We Are

The Hawthorne Cancer Foundation (formerly Johns Cancer Foundation) serves those who reside or receive treatment in the Greater Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area by providing assistance to financially distressed cancer patients and providing educational resources for those patients.

A cancer patient who is currently receiving treatment in the greater Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area and who can clearly demonstrate financial hardship is eligible.  Assistance may be available for transportation expenses. 

Other types of financial assistance can include utility bills, medications, telephone, food, rent, mortgage,  or credit card debt with expenses related to cancer treatments.  The Foundation does not cover illnesses other than cancer, payment of medical bills or hospital bills, payment to physicians, or ambulance services.  Note: Grant checks will be made payable to the individual and distributed by the Advocate and a Grant Committee Representative from The Hawthorne Cancer Foundation.

Intake Process
Applicants are referred by advocates, who are social workers, and medical providers. The advocate completes a grant application on behalf of the applicant online at https://www.thehawthorne.org/grants. Applications are typically reviewed on the first Wednesday of each month. Refer to the FAQ section on the grant page for additional details about the qualification process. An applicant can only receive one grant per year.
