Legal Aid Works, Tappahannock office, provides free legal aid to low-income individuals and families in civil cases. (No criminal cases). We are funded by the federal, state, and local governments and by a wide range of local individuals, agencies, and organizations, including the Rappahannock and Piedmont United Ways.
Priority is given to cases involving housing or government benefits. Handicapped clients must call ahead and arrangements will be made for them to be met at the Essex Department of Social Services. Offers help with a broad range of legal counseling, negotiation and representation for its clients in non-criminal cases. Does not handle traffic cases.
To those who qualify, they offer help with: divorce, wills guardianship, power of attorney and name changes, contract disputes, garnishments, bankruptcy, consumer credit violations, defective merchandise, warranty problems, attachment and wage earner plans, wage claims, employment agency problems, unemployment compensation, worker's compensation, employment discrimination, landlord tenant disputes, rent problems, public housing disputes, housing code violations, broken leases, evictions and housing discrimination, assistance with government problems, Social Security, state and local welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI, veteran's benefits, and black lung claims, problems of the elderly.
