Who We Are

Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (CVLAS) provides free legal services in civil matters to persons with low-income and those over 60 years of age and preventive law information to the community in civil matters.
Areas of concern to elders that are focused on include Medicaid, Social Security, SSI, consumer problems, power of attorney, advance medical directives, guardianship, housing problems, landlord-tenant concerns and real property, and occasionally estate matters and insurance problems. Services concerning retirement benefits, elder abuse, disability, age discrimination in housing and in employment are also provided.
Pamphlets on debtors rights, tenant rights, employee rights, bankruptcy and unemployment benefits are also available.

Household income must be below the federal poverty guidelines. Households also must have low resources. The elderly (60 or older) may receive legal advice without regard to their finances, in certain cases.
