SeniorNavigator—where community and technology come together.September 23rd is National Fall Prevention Awareness Day!
The National Center on Aging uses the first day of fall to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults. Often people don't think the causes or risk factors associated with falling until it is too late. There are many steps you can take to prevent falls. An important step is to make sure your home is safe and free of fall risks. You may need to consider some home modifications to decrease your risk of falling. Another step is to understand how your health status or medication can pose a fall risk. You can also increase your peace of mind by installing a Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) in your home if you should fall while you are home alone.
A final important step in fall prevention is to exercise regularly. Exercise increases strength and agility, both of which can decrease the likelihood of a fall. If your physician feels you are able to perform regular exercise, you should include strength training exercises for both the upper and lower body and specific balance exercises.
Enjoy your fall safely!
