Frequently Asked Questions

Why do services sometimes come up in a search if I don’t include a zip code?
The programs and services that appear when you don’t include a zip code are those which serve the state of Virginia or the United States. Because these programs serve you, regardless of where you live, we want you to know about them.

Sometimes I don’t get any local or statewide services, why?
For a match to occur, two things must be present:

  • correct topic or phrase must be used
  • services related to that topic in a given locality must exist.

How do I know which topics to use in my search?
Our index of topics in the customized search may be of assistance to you. It includes the most frequently searched topics on SeniorNavigator.

    • Try a few different variations of the word / phrase you have in mind.
    • Check your spelling. We have a built-in spell checker for some common misspellings but it will not pull up your desired results in all cases. For example, osteopporrosis will not return any results because it is spelled incorrectly. However, osteoporosis is a correct topic keyword.
    • Use the drop-down menu listed in Step One of the customized search.
    • Use the drop-down menu after clicking on one of the five areas of interest listed across the top of each page

How does the search for local services work?
The search results lists services that are located in or that serve the zip code or city/county that you select. If no local services are found in the exact area that you search, the results listed will be state wide services.

Can I find listings for the entire state?
Yes, the Customized Search allows you to set the state of Virginia as the search area for any given keyword.

How do I adjust the font size of the text to make it easier to read?

  • The upper right hand corner of the site has an area where you can change text size to Medium, Larger and Largest.

You may also change text size using your browser:

  • If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, you should select the “View” option on your toolbar. Once you select the “View” option, you will select “Text Size” on the drop down menu. You will have several choices: Largest, larger, medium, smaller or smallest. Once you make a choice, the text on the site will be adjusted.
  • If you are using AOL as your browser, you should minimize this browser, then open Internet Explorer and follow the process as detailed above. Once you have made your text size selection, close your Internet Explorer browser and then maximize AOL. The font size of your text will be adjusted.
  • If you are using Netscape as your browser, you should select the “View” option on your toolbar. Once you select the “View” option, you will be able to choose either Increase Font or Decrease Font. Once you make a choice, the text on the site will be adjusted. If you continue to make the same selection, the text will continue to be adjusted.

How do I assess the credibility of the articles on the website?
SeniorNavigator.org, like many websites, uses content from a variety of sources. Most of our health content was written by a source such as the National Institutes of Health. Each article is also reviewed for appropriateness to include in SeniorNavigator.com. Often material has been used with permission from an outside source who we consider to be an authority in their field. For example, Alzheimer's Disease was developed by the Alzheimer's Association and they have allowed us to include the information here. It is important for each person to evaluate and consider the relevance of every article to their situation. To help you decide whether or not the information you are reading is credible for your situation we include the following:

  • The original source, with a hyperlink, so you may learn more about the source.
  • The name of the SeniorNavigator.com reviewer
  • The last date that the page was updated is listed in the search results.

How do I set up a library for my clients or others?
There a couple of ways you could do this. If the person you care for does not have Internet access or email, you may want to update your own settings to reflect their concerns and print the articles so that your care recipient can read them at their convenience. If your care recipient does have an email address, you could set up a library using their email address and demographic information on the My Library page. This feature allows you to file your favorite services, articles and links in one convenient location!

Once you completed the registration for the care recipient, you would need to share the user name and password so that they could log on at a later time. Once the care recipient logged on, they could then change their password or content preferences if desired.

What if I want to register with the site but I don’t have an email?
You may sign up for a free email account. At the registration page we provided a link to one of these free services. We do not recommend this service over any other service and there are several email services available for you to use.

How does SeniorNavigator protect my privacy?
We are committed to protecting your privacy through available technology and through the policies that guide our work. We do not sell your personal information. Please read our privacy policy for a full explanation of our privacy commitment to you.
