Who We Are
Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) provides free legal assistance in civil matters to low-income and elderly residents within the service area. VLAS serves the entire community by providing free information, advice and representation in such areas as housing, healthcare, income and benefits, family issues, consumer, and education.
Free legal help for Landlord disputes and evictions; subsidized and public housing; mortgage foreclosures; hazardous conditions; utilities; Medicaid; Medicare; FAMIS; health insurance; social security disability; unemployment; food stamps; uncontested divorce; simple wills; general powers of attorney; collections and repossessions; consumer credit violations, etc.
All initial intake goes through VLAS's LawLine at 866-534-5243 during the hours of 9am-3:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. LawLine is a toll-free intake/advice hotline. If advice is all that is needed it can be given immediately over the telephone. More extensive service can also be provided.
No fee for service except possible out-of-pocket items such as filing fees or publication notices. Interpreters are available. After hours and weekends, call to hear pre-recorded legal information on a variety of topics at 866-534-5243.
