Diabetes EyeCare Program
Who We Are
The Diabetes EyeCare program promotes annual, dilated eye exams for people with diabetes. Program raises awareness of diabetic eye disease, including diabetic retinopathy, provides free diabetic eye disease educational materials and facilitates access to eye care at no cost to individual.
Diabetic retinopathy is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina. The only way to diagnose and treat diabetic retinopathy is through an eye exam with an ophthalmologist, an eye medical doctor.
Individuals who are eligible for a referral receive a comprehensive medical eye exam and up to one year of treatment, with no cost for any disease diagnosed during the initial exam.
Eyeglasses, prescription drugs, hospital services and fees of other medical professionals are not included in this program.
EyeCare America is a program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
