SeniorNavigator started as one of the Foundation's initiatives.

Theresa A. Thomas Memorial Foundation
The Theresa A. Thomas Memorial Foundation is a Richmond-based institution established in 1975 by George D. Thomas, a central Virginia businessman and real estate developer. The Foundation honors Mr. Thomas’ wife, a trained nurse who died after a brief illness. The Thomas Foundation’s mission is to support organizations providing medical care or assistance with emphasis on primary care to the uninsured and to medically underserved areas. Mr. Thomas wanted to be sure no one else would suffer as his wife did due to a lack of medical care.

The Thomas Foundation directs its support to organizations and programs primarily within a 100 mile radius of the City of Richmond. In its 29 year history, the Thomas Foundation has donated over $23 million to charitable health care organizations, both large and small. Through the leadership of its Trustees, the foundation has established or supported a variety of unique health programs.

Virginia Department for the Aging

The Virginia Department for the Aging fosters the dignity, independence, and security of older Virginians by promoting partnerships with families and communities. VDA helps people find the information and services they need to lead healthy and independent lives as they grow older.

The federal government has designated VDA as the agency to oversee all of the state programs that use funds provided by the federal Older Americans Act.

Twenty-five local Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) have contracts with VDA to provide services to communities throughout Virginia. Other groups also contract with VDA to provide services.

Medicorp Health System

MediCorp Health System is a locally owned and operated regional health care organization. The cornerstone of MediCorp is the not-for-profit Mary Washington Hospital that has served the Fredericksburg area for over a century. A comprehensive health care system, MediCorp offers a full range of services including comprehensive behavioral health services, senior living, a skilled nursing home, home health including hospice and ambulatory care including a freestanding surgery service. At the heart of MediCorp Health System is its mission to improve the health status of all people within the community. The Virginia Federation of Chapters (VFC)

NARFE is the only political, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization protecting and preserving the earned retirement benefits of all federal civilians. Since 1921, NARFE has been a vital resource to the federal community by informing, educating, and guiding its members to answers needed on issues affecting retirement benefits such as COLA updates, premium conversion, and other legislative issues. The 55 chapters of The Virginia Federation of Chapters (VFC) serve as advocates for the grassroots issues affecting senior citizens, in general, as well as its NARFE members who are current, former and retired federal employees--spouses and survivor annuitants.

Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging

The Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging (V4A) is a private, nonprofit 501 (c) 3 association of Virginia's twenty-five Area Agencies on Aging, covering the entire state of Virginia, each serving a designated planning service area. V4A advocates for the needs and concerns of older Virginians, serves as a liaison between national and state organizations, and provides opportunities for the development of creative ideas, resources and discussion of potential solutions to problems faced by older Virginians. Additionally, V4A utilizes federal, state, local and private resources to operate the statewide programs of the Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program (serving older Virginians receiving long-term care in nursing homes, assisted living facilities or community based services) and Senior Medicare Patrol (combating Medicare and Medicaid fraud, waste and abuse) through the Area Agencies on Aging network.

Virginia Association of Nonprofit Homes for the Aging

The Virginia Association of Nonprofit Homes for the Aging, VANHA, is a statewide organization of not-for-profit retirement housing facilities, adult care residences, nursing homes, and continuing care retirement communities. Facilities are sponsored by a variety of religious, fraternal, public and private organizations dedicated to providing quality care and services to the elderly. VANHA was founded in 1973 by nursing home administrators who believed that non-profit homes were unique in their needs and resources and required their own organization. VANHA is proud to have served the State of Virginia elderly for 25 years. Since it's beginning, over 100 facilities, representing over 15,000 residents, administrators, staff and boards, and over 100 affiliate members have joined VANHA. VANHA has a central office with a full-time president and support staff in Richmond.

Virginia Association for Hospices

The Virginia Association For Hospices (VAH) is a private, nonprofit organization of Virginia hospices that serves as a vital link among hospice programs, health professionals and the public. VAH works to assure the availability of hospice to the people of Virginia while promoting the highest standards of end of life care.

VAH provides information, training, and technical assistance to Virginia's hospice providers. And, VAH provides forums for the exchange of ideas among hospice professionals in the rapidly changing field of end of life care. VAH also serves as an advocate to assure the availability of quality care of the terminally ill.

Through these programs and services, VAH helps Virginia hospices to insure quality end of life care in Virginia.

The Virginia Center on Aging

The Virginia Center on Aging (VCoA) was established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1978 and located at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond to serve as a resource and stimulus for aging-related issues.
Its focus is applied gerontology – the translation of research and best practice to benefit Virginians in everyday life.

The VCoA’s research and education emphases include: self-sufficiency and community-based supports in aging; lifelong learning; multidisciplinary healthcare; and disabilities in aging.

In 1982, the General Assembly authorized VCoA to administer the Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases Award Fund to stimulate research in Virginia on the causes, consequences and treatment of dementia.

The VCoA has trained thousands of professionals and paraprofessionals through workshops, seminars, conferences, and publications, and partners with governmental and community organizations and individuals to advance interdisciplinary studies and research.

Virginia Geriatric Education Center

The Virginia Geriatric Education Center (VGEC) is located on the medical campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. The VGEC provides comprehensive educational services and materials to professionals involved in the health care of older adults. Professions include dentistry, gerontology, health administration, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, psychiatry, psychology, physical therapy, rehabilitation counseling, social work, patient counseling, radiation sciences and other professions involved in assessment and treatment of the aged. The VGEC also offers specialty training and resources in areas such as alcohol and drug abuse, medication management, developmental disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, Validation Therapy, prevention of pressure ulcers and rural and minority issues relating to older people.

Established in 1977, the Center for Gerontology serves as the organizational unit and focal point for aging-related activities at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It operates under the auspice of a director, associate director, extension specialist, and more than 50 faculty affiliates representing 7 colleges and 25 departments/units across campus. The Center’s primary mission is to foster and facilitate multidisciplinary research that enhances the quality of life of older adults. In support of this mission, the Center focuses primarily on three streams of coordinated research: Family Gerontology, Health and Aging, and Elder Rights. The Center frequently collaborates with other institutions of higher education, state governmental agencies, hospitals, and community services as it strives to advance its research mission. The Center is the administrative unit for the Graduate Certificate in Gerontology and the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program (PBCP) entitled, "Administration of Community-Based Services for Older Adults." The Graduate Certificate Program is a university-approved program of graduate study and one of the first programs awarded the Program of Merit distinction by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. The graduate certificate is awarded only in conjunction with a master's or doctoral degree. In addition, the Center sponsors Sigma Phi Omega, the national honor society for students and professionals in gerontology. The Center also serves as a resource for academic departments across the university and for community agencies and organizations that concern themselves with research or services to the older population. The Center's Extension specialist provides statewide leadership to county and city Extension agents throughout the commonwealth.

Its 2000 members represent pharmacists, students, and technicians throughout the Commonwealth practicing in all aspects of pharmacy, including community, hospital, industry, and education.
