How to use SeniorNavigator: The Basics

The two main types of information available on this site:

There are three ways to access information about local services and articles on SeniorNavigator.org.

  1. Quick Search by Topic and Zip Code or City/County
  2. Customized Search by Topic Index and Locality
  3. Main Topic Buttons by Category or Topic Index

1. Quick Search by Topic and Zip Code

Screenshot of Quick Search boxThis search option gives you the ability to search for both local services and articles at the same time. Use the Quick Search boxes (located in the top left corner of each page) for a quick search by Topic and Zip code or City/County. The results will provide local services, articles and links related to a topic.

Example: In the Topic box, type in a phrase or topic like: assisted living. In the Zip box, type in a zip code 24523. Then, click Search Now. A listing of assisted living facilities that serve 24523 will appear along with related articles and links.

2. Customized Search by Topic Index and Locality

Screenshot of Customized Search linkThe Customized Search gives you assistance if you do not know the Topic and/or ZIP Code and allow you to narrow your search for customized results.

Click on the “Customized Search” link located just after the Quick Search on the upper left hand corner of each page.

The Customized Search has three easy steps.

  1. Select a topic from the frequently searched topic list by
    • Clicking on the arrow on the right hand side to reveal the “drop-down” list of choices
    • You can move up and down the list using your mouse
    • Click on your topic and it will appear in the box
    • OR
      View the topics in AIRS codes order by clicking on the AIRS codes link which will open another “drop-down” list you use to pick the topic
  2. Select a location
    • Type in the ZIP Code of the area you would like to search if you know it OR
    • Use the scroll bar on the right hand side of the City/County box to choose from a list of Cities and Counties across the Commonwealth. Click on your location and leave it highlighted.
  3. The check boxes in this section allow you to refine your search even further. For example, you can click on the Wheelchair Accessible box to see only programs and services that fit these particular criteria.
    Click on the Search button to view the results.

3. Main Topic Buttons by Category or Topic Index

Six areas of interest are located at the top of each page underneath the SeniorNavigator logo. They are: Health, Legal and Financial, Housing and Long-term Care, Community, Caregiving and Aging Well.

After selecting your area of interest you will find two options for finding helpful information.

For articles and links: click one of the topics listed on the page. Screenshot of sample Categories page

For local services, articles and related links: choose a Topic from the drop-down menu after the main list of topics, add your Zip code or choose city/county and click on “Search now”.
